Abstract

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Renewables has secured a major contract from Bihar State Power Generation Company (BSPGCL) for developing a 116 MW solar power project along with a 241 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Kajra, located in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district. The project must be completed within 18 months. This initiative is part of the state’s plan to expand its renewable energy capacity and improve grid reliability.

The project was tendered in April 2025 and requires L&T to ensure the delivery of a maximum power output of 50.5 MWh over four hours. The solar modules used for the project must come from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s List-I under the Approved Models and Manufacturers of Solar Photovoltaic Modules, as per the tender conditions. The battery system will feature advanced liquid cooling technology that improves power density, safety, and the overall life of the equipment.

The integration of a 4-hour BESS with solar power will help BSPGCL store excess solar energy generated during the day and supply it during peak demand hours. This time-shifting ability ensures a more stable and reliable electricity supply. The project also supports Bihar’s broader sustainability goals through the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan, aimed at promoting water conservation, afforestation, and environmental protection.
